A resource for your sustainability journey
RFI is a nonprofit community interest company that has been active in OIC markets from the start. We invested our efforts since our founding in 2015 to building awareness of the relevance of responsible finance to OIC markets. As those efforts gained traction and financial institutions in OIC markets started communicating their aspirations for responsible finance, we saw a growing gap between the commitments and the capacity starting to develop.
Rather than just commenting from the sidelines about the gap between ambition and implementation, the RFI Foundation saw an opportunity to share the experience gained through our engagement with financial institutions in OIC markets to improve the development of execution capacity for the ambitious plans these financial institutions have started to lay out.
RFI Foundation has always been a mission-driven organization, and the conversion to become a Community Interest Company in 2024 represents a milestone in our shift to becoming a more active participant in the adoption of responsible finance in OIC markets. The financial institution services we offer build off of the experience gained from our engagements with financial sector stakeholders in OIC markets, in Islamic finance and more broadly in responsible finance.
In line with our mission, we offer them with the express purpose of supporting financial institutions and their staff in building their own capacity to implement their own current environmental, social, governance (ESG), climate- and nature commitments, as well as to be able to respond to future changes in this dynamic field. We recognize that we are a part of a wider responsible finance ecosystem, and approach every engagement in the spirit of collaboration, cooperation and innovation with a thoughtful and empathetic approach to the challenges that stakeholders experience with responsible finance.

Financed Emissions
Learn how to understand your climate risk exposure using the RFI Foundation’s open-access database. Our top-down financed emission estimates, which are available for 11 OIC countries, provide bank and financial sector insights about the location and interlinkages between a bank’s financed emissions exposures and the wider economy to help identify how to better address your climate risks.
Internal Advocate
We support financial institutions by bringing the deep responsible finance experience of the RFI Foundation to offer guidance on the implementation challenges that you face in meeting your ESG, climate- and nature-related commitments. Our advocacy includes helping you identify the next steps and capabilities you’ll need to achieve your ESG priorities.
Emissary Network
Responsible finance is new for many financial institutions in OIC markets, and it is not a copy-and-paste process so it is important to upskill your workforce to gain understanding about how to apply evolving practices to your institution. We provide expert-led trainings and engagement sessions to build competencies on a variety of sustainability topics across financial institutions, including by empowering peer learning within your institution through RFI’s Emissary Network.

We provide insights, advice, and networking specific to sustainability efforts in OIC markets and Islamic finance to stakeholders globally including investors and financial institutions.
As a result of the importance of Islamic finance in many OIC markets, our team is dedicated to bridging the gap between sustainability and Islamic principles, such as by providing expertise relating to the integration of ESG within financial institutions operating within a Shari’ah mandate.
